Czechia vs South Africa
The two losing teams from the opening matchday in Group A will battle it out on Thursday, as the Czech Republic will face South Africa in a crunch World Cup 2026 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Czechia dropped their first game against South Korea after squandering an early lead. After Ladislav Krejci put them ahead near the hour mark, Miroslav Koubek’s men conceded two goals from Hwang In-Beom and Oh Hyeon-Gyu en route to losing 2-1.
On the other hand, South Africa lost 2-0 to tournament co-hosts Mexico, as Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez found the back of the net. And what made the defeat even worse for Bafana Bafana is that they lost two of their key players to straight red cards.
Another loss here would essentially cut their World Cup campaign short, so this is a must-win game for both sides, and SBOTOP has you covered.
Talking Points
Krejci is becoming a cult hero for Czechia
Since he was given the captain’s armband last March, Ladislav Krejci has become Czechia’s de facto leader. The Wolves centre-back went on to score in both matches of his nation’s World Cup 2026 qualification playoff path against the Republic of Ireland and Denmark, in addition to taking penalties in the resulting shootouts, and he has scored their first goal in this year’s finals.
Against South Korea, Krejci gave the Czech Republic the lead in the 59th minute, as he headed the ball into the back of the net after a long throw from Vladimir Coufal. Seven of Czechia’s last 14 World Cup goals have come via headers, so they’ll likely use their aerial prowess to their advantage when they meet South Africa anew this midweek. The 27-year-old skipper now has six goals in 28 caps.
Head coach Miroslav Koubek drew criticism for changing his front three after Krejci gave them a one-goal lead. When he subbed out Patrik Schick, Lukas Provod, and Pavel Sulc, Czechia conceded two late goals, and they had no one to rely on for the equaliser. Perhaps Koubek will have learned his mistake by then when his side goes up against South Africa.
Soft red cards doom South Africa
South Africa are undermanned heading into Thursday’s match against Czechia, as Yaya Sithole and vice-captain Themba Zwane will serve their suspensions for picking up straight red cards against Mexico.

Sithole received his marching orders in the 50th minute for his challenge on Brian Gutierrez, while Zwane also got his in the 84th minute for his inadvertent elbow on Roberto Alvarado. Head coach Hugo Broos said he does not agree with the call against Zwane, as South Africa was attacking Mexico’s goal at the time, and Alvarado impeded the Mamelodi Sundowns forward’s path.
With Sithole and Zwane on the sidelines, there will be more minutes for the likes of Oswin Appollis, Evidence Makgopa, and Thalente Mbatha. Bafana Bafana will also need more from Lyle Foster to stay alive.
History
The Czech Republic and South Africa first met in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw in Group B. Czechia eventually progressed to the semi-finals, losing 2-0 to eventual champions Brazil, before placing third in the tournament.
Czechia have only lost their two opening World Cup matches twice before, in 1954 and 1970. Miroslav Koubek’s men will feel confident of bouncing back on Thursday, as they’ve won their six prior games before the South Korea defeat.
South Africa’s latest result means that they’re six games without a win (D3, L3). Bafana Bafana were victorious in their last World Cup match against European opposition, beating France 2-1 in 2010, and they will be hoping for a similar outcome to avoid losing successive World Cup matches for the very first time.
Betting Tip
The World Cup 2026 odds expect the Czech Republic to hand South Africa their second straight loss of this year’s quadrennial tournament, likely ending their run in the group stage. Czechia are 1.79 favourites to win, while South Africa are big 4.56 underdogs, and a draw is valued at 3.52 in the 1X2 market.
Czechia should provide enough World Cup 2026 highlights en route to eliminating South Africa, as they’ve shown previously.
