Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia
Group H action is underway on Monday; with tournament favourites Spain set to face newcomers Cape Verde, before World Cup 2026: Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay takes centre stage at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay are World Cup royalty, as twice champions, and they are going through a stage of renewal having said goodbye to some Celeste legends, while Saudi Arabia have recently become a respected member of the international football community, backed by an ambitious domestic league.
Saudi manager Giorgos Donis is an experienced coach in the Middle East, previously leading Al-Hilal to the Saudi Super Cup and Maccabi Tel Aviv to Toto Cup success and, while the Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay betting odds say his team has an uphill battle, Donis will have them well drilled to face the South Americans.
Talking Points
A draw would suit the Saudis
The Falcons are placed 61st in the FIFA rankings, compared to Spain’s second slot and Uruguay’s 17th position, and only eight places above newcomers Cape Verde. What they do have to their advantage is familiarity in the squad, as all but one of Donis’ group play in the Middle East, predominantly the Saudi Pro League, and not many nations can say they have such a concentration of players at home. It has been a successful strategy as the Falcons reached the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals, only to be beaten by Mexico, and they qualified for the World Cup thanks to a vital win over Indonesia and a tense goalless draw with Iraq.

RC Lens fullback Saud Abdulhamid is Saudi Arabia’s only player in Europe’s top five leagues and previously as a Roma player, where he arrived in 2024, he became the first Saudi star to score in the Europa League, and he is part of a backline which has conceded just two goals in their last four outings. Donis, who took over in March, knows his team will probably advance to the Round of 32 with four points, and so a draw in their opener, with Cape Verde to come, will suit the Falcons just fine.
A new era for Uruguay
La Celeste come into this tournament with three of their most famous names of the 21st century absent for the first time in modern times, as the strike pair of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani and defensive rock Diego Godin will be watching from the sidelines as fans. Suarez and Cavani scored an incredible 127 goals in 279 games combined for their country, while Atletico Madrid legend Godin racked up 161 caps. His Atleti protegee Jose Maria Gimenez is still at the heart of Los Rojiblancos’ defence and now he captains La Celeste and, at 31 years of age he has accumulated 99 caps. He doesn’t have the menacing threat of his mentor Godin, but Gimenez is a formidable defender with superb positional sense and a command of the ball. Alongside Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo he forms a classy centre-back partnership and Uruguay will be a hard team to break down.
There are no prolific strikers to step into Suarez or Cavani’s shoes, though former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, now at Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, is a big-hearted forward with pace, strength and skill, and an eye for goal with 13 from 38 appearances and, at 26 years of age Nunez has plenty to offer.
Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde is the star of the Uruguay team and the one Celeste fans are looking at to make some special Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay highlights; and he’s certainly capable. Valverde scored a 22 minute hat-trick as Los Blancos dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League, and he’s a skilful attacking midfielder, full of running and fight and Valverde is a potential match-winner.
History
Uruguay are at their 15th World Cup finals as winners in 1930 and 1950. More recently La Celeste were semi-finalists in South Africa in 2010 and quarter-finalists in 2018, but they fell at the group stage in Qatar at the 2022 tournament. Meanwhile, the Falcons have reached seven of the last nine finals, beating eventual winners Argentina in their opening game at the 2022 tournament.
These two nations have met twice before, playing out a 1-1 draw in a friendly in 2014, and then Uruguay beat Saudi 1-0 at the 2018 World Cup finals.
Uruguay have played just twice in 2026, with two friendly draws, against England and Algeria, while Saudi Arabia have won one, drawn one and lost three in 2026.
Betting Tip
Uruguay are strong favourites at SBOTOP odds of 1.40 to win this match with Saudi Arabia at 7.50 and the draw is at 4.33. I think this will be a tight game and, for an alternative bet, Under 2.50 goals is priced at 1.85, but I’m backing La Celeste who have greater depth of quality in their squad.
